To Benefit CHUM and the Steve O’Neil Apartments

“The Greenest Run in the Arrowhead”

Hosted by St Andrews by the Lake Episcopal Church

When: Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 3:00 pm (Children’s 2k at 4:00pm )

Race packet pickup 1–2:30 pm race day at the race start. No Saturday packet pick-up.

Where: Marshall School Trails, 1215 Rice Lake Road, Duluth, Minnesota, 55811 Park in main lot and look for signs. The start and finish will be on the football field.

Course: The Fern Valley FiveK will be held on a 2.5 kilometer running/ski trail on the Marshall Campus. The trails are primarily grass or woodchip covered, with occasional sections of gravel. This event is spectator friendly with bleacher seating, announcing, and music. The spectator area is handicapped accessible but the running course is not.

Entry Fee: $25 adults and $10 for 18 and under with all proceeds going to housing for homeless families

What: A timed 5 kilometer walk/run setting the standard for a green community event. Every aspect of the event will be organized and executed with the goal of having the smallest impact on our natural environment as possible:

Held on the running trails at Marshall School; means no street closures resulting in pollution producing traffic delays.

Racer’s packets will be distributed in custom designed, recycled content, reusable shopping bags

Fresh, Cold, Lake Superior tap water will be provided without the use of plastic water bottles or cups

Racer’s bibs will be made from recycled paper or up-cycled reclaimed TYVEK

A time credit of 30 seconds will be given to every participant that travels to and from the event by a green manner: Public Transport, bicycle, walk, run, carpool with other participants or hitches a ride on a black bear

Why: A 5 Kilometer Walk/Run to Benefit CHUM (CHUM is people of faith working together to provide basic necessities, foster stable lives, and organize for a just and compassionate community. CHUM is a 501c3.) and The Steve O’Neil Apartments.

Steve O’Neil spent his life in Duluth working for Duluth’s most vulnerable families. His legacy will continue, as the new apartments and emergency shelter will not only help those families, but will also help fulfill Duluth’s vision of becoming a city that welcomes the stranger, feeds the hungry, and houses the homeless. The Steve O’Neil Apartments will be a major step in preventing long-term, chronic homelessness for families. The Emergency Family Shelter will address the initial crisis when a family becomes homeless.

The Steve O’Neil Apartments are an $11.2 million project that includes 44 units of permanent supportive housing and 6 units of emergency shelter for families with children who have experienced long-term homelessness. The Steve O’Neil Apartments are being developed by One Roof Community Housing and Center City Housing. CHUM will operate the Emergency Family Shelter and provide supportive services to the families living in the apartments. From: http://www.chumduluth.org/
